Mail delivery

Johnny Miles MacPherson of Giants Lake was mail driver through Goshen in the 20’s and 30’s. The contract for truck driven mail from Antigonish to Goldboro was held by Ed Rhude, prior to 1943, but horses, driven by Johnny Miles MacPherson, were used in bad weather. In 1943 the mail contract was awarded to Clancy Burke from Golboro; he held the contract for 33 years.  The mail drivers took passengers and carried freight when there was room.  They also served as itinerant merchants carrying fish and other local produce through the communities for sale – such as strawberries.
