Upper Big Tracadie Foster Children

In the 1960’s a new kind of child came to the community of Upper Big Tracadie; the Foster Child.  Several families, notably the home of Charles and Hattie Ash and the home of Joseph and Elsie Mae Elms, were well known for their role as foster parents.  As they are sometimes referred to, these chosen children came from many different places within the province of Nova Scotia and were placed with willing families by the Family and Children Services agency.

When asked to reflect on his time as a foster parent, Charles Ash, said, “Some of them were good company.  Some of them were really bad.”  He and his wife fostered so many children he lost count along the way.  “No good me telling how many children we had, I’d be telling a lie…there were a lot.”
