Aztec Bonanza: online slot review
Released on 5 March 2020, Aztec Bonanza offers 6 symbols on each reel, ways to win that can expand to 7,776, cascading wins and a free spins round. Its setting draws on an imagined ancient Aztec paradise.
Theme and story
The game places a hidden Aztec temple in a colourful clearing amid Amazon rainforest. Its 5 reels feature gems inspired by Aztec imagery alongside familiar symbols associated with casino card games around the world.
Visuals, music and animation
Pragmatic Play depicts an ancient Aztec setting with 3D visuals, vivid colours and animation. Rather than spinning, the reels use a tumbling mechanic; the source review describes it as working on both mobile and desktop devices.
The symbols have a weathered look intended to evoke the Aztec era. Soft background music gives the game a calm tone, accompanied by bird calls that suit its Amazon-inspired surroundings.
Top Casinos to Play Aztec Bonanza:
How the game works
Aztec Bonanza uses a layout that differs from a conventional slot. It has 5 reels, ways to win ranging from 384 up to 7,776, and room for as many as 6 symbols on each reel. At the outset, 12 positions are blocked, leaving this starting arrangement:
- Reel-1: 2 symbols
- Reel-2: 4 symbols
- Reel-3: 6 symbols
- Reel-4: 4 symbols
- Reel-5: 2 symbols
The initial layout provides 384 ways to win, with the potential to reach 7,776 when blocked positions open. A winning combination must begin on reel 1, then match across neighbouring reels in order. The listed combinations are:
- 5-symbol combination: 1-2-3-4-5
- 4-symbol combination: 1-2-3-4
- 3-symbol combination: 1-2-3
The game has 8 standard symbols, with prizes awarded for matches of 3, 4, or 5. The green Aztec gem carries the top listed payout. A run of 5 across reels 1-2-3-4-5 pays 75x the ‘coin value’ for every coin staked. For instance, staking 4 coins at a coin value of 0.50 produces 75x the coin value (37.50), then multiplied by 4 coins for a total payout of 150.00.
In Aztec Bonanza, players can adjust several options: auto-spins, the ‘i’ paytable, quick spins, battery saver (which switches animations off), ambient music on/off, sound FX on/off, and game history.
Bonus rounds and free spins
Tumbling Reels: After a win, its symbols disappear and new ones drop into the open spaces. Any resulting win triggers another tumble; this repeats until no further combinations form, then the accumulated wins are paid.
Symbol Unlocking: Following 2 consecutive tumbles or a feature trigger, blocked positions open, adding space for symbols and more possible ways to win. The change may also reveal mystery symbols, clear lower-paying symbols from the reels, or add 2x2 expanded symbols.
Free Spins: The bonus round uses full 5x6 reels, with all 4 corners open. It starts with 5 free spins and includes mystery symbols and the removal of lower-paying symbols. A series of 2x2 symbols appears on reels 1-2 and 4-5, while tumbling reels remain in play.
Bet sizes, RTP and volatility
Use the -/ button to open the wager settings. The ‘BET’ field selects coins per spin; multiply that figure by 30 to match the ‘TOTAL BET’ amount. ‘COIN VALUE’ can be set from 0.01 to 0.50. Each spin requires at least 30 coins, for a minimum bet of 0.30; the upper limit is 300 coins per spin, or 150.00. The stated RTP is 96.53%, and the game is classified as high variance.
Review summary
Pragmatic Play’s wager setup may take a moment to understand, though the interactive paytable updates payouts to reflect the selected settings. The source review presents Aztec Bonanza as straightforward once the unlocking mechanic is clear. That mechanic is central to the experience, opening the way to free spins, mystery symbols and 2x2 symbols, with the potential for 7,776 ways to win.
