Genesis Global Ceases Operations & MGA Suspends Licensing
Genesis Global Limited has reported that it shut its Maltese operations and filed for insolvency with the local courts, a major development reported across iGaming news outlets.
The company operated several online casino brands under a Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) license. Following its insolvency filing, the MGA suspended its license, and the company’s casinos stopped accepting new players.
Genesis Global Limited’s MGA authorization was held under company number C-65325, registered with the Malta Business Registry (MBR). The MGA reported on its official news feed on 17 January 2023 that it had suspended license MGA/CRP/314/2015, with the suspension taking effect on 16 January 2023. It cited a breach of Reg. 9 (1) (f) as the grounds for its action.
The regulation in question bars a company that has filed for insolvency from continuing to provide gambling or gaming services under an MGA license. The suspension could be appealed, although the article considered further proceedings unlikely.
There appears to have been a delay between the MGA’s suspension decision and the insolvency filing. Maltese news reports said Genesis Global Limited had ended its Malta operations on 23 December 2022 and laid off 140+ staff. That day, employees received a notice stating that all roles were redundant. The letter also warned that December salaries or statutory payments might not be paid in full, or at all.
The reason for the interval is unknown; the MGA announced its decision twenty-four days later.
What Happens to Members’ Casino Balances?
Members did not need to worry about their balances, citing MGA rules that require casino funds to be held in a bank account separate from routine business operations. Under that account, the money is kept apart from company cash flow and balance-sheet funds, so auditors cannot assign it to debts such as unpaid employee wages.
The article said members of the casinos listed below could still request withdrawals under the MGA rule. Anyone affected by a closure who has trouble recovering funds was advised to contact the MGA for assistance.
Casinos named in connection with the Genesis Global Limited MGA license suspension:
- Genesis Casino
- Casino Cruise
- Spinit Casino

Previous UKGC Market Exit
In January 2022, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) imposed a £3.8m fine on Genesis Global Limited and suspended its license. The operator subsequently left the UKGC market.
The UKGC’s investigation concluded that the operator had failed to meet social responsibility and anti-money-laundering requirements.
Among the cases described by the UKGC was an NHS nurse who spent £245,000 over three months while earning £30,000 per year. The regulator also cited a customer whose source of funds was requested only after spending had reached £209,000; Genesis Global Limited had previously estimated that player’s annual earnings at £111,000.
The article suggested the 7-figure penalty may have contributed to the operator’s financial difficulties and could have played a part in its decision to seek insolvency through the Maltese courts.
